Next Generation Risk Assessment
In a nation highly-exposed to natural hazards, we need to understand the potential consequences for our communities, homes and infrastructure.
What are we doing?
We will develop and test new methods for quantifying and combining risks from multiple hazards, and explore the effects of cascading and compounding hazards on risk.
This research theme will create consistent and reliable natural hazard risk information, improve the way risks are assessed, and explore innovative ways to reduce their impacts. It will measure how natural hazard risks are changing over time for people, the environment, and our homes and infrastructure.
By looking across different locations, timeframes, and user needs, the research will provide a clearer and more consistent picture of risk. Taking a whole-of-system approach and working closely with our users will help ensure better information to support decisions, and more effective action.
Focus areas
Hazard, exposure and vulnerability: Coordination, development and standardisation of existing hazard, exposure and vulnerability information.
Systems, dynamics and dependencies: Understanding the dynamic characteristics of people, critical infrastructure networks, systems and the interactions between them.
Design, assessment and interventions: Development of design approaches and risk reduction options (with the Platform’s other research themes and programmes), and assessment of these options.
Trajectories and recovery: Developing different future pathways for the built, natural, and human environments to assess future risk, and developing and testing post-event recovery strategies.
Risk, resilience and scenarios: Quantifying consequences for different scenarios, and testing risk and resilience metrics across natural hazards.

How are we doing it?
We are working closely with the Platform’s other science themes and programmes, particularly on the development and testing of risk reduction options. Research projects are also being co-designed and co-produced with users, particularly at regional and national scales.
