The Natural Hazards and Resilience Platform Te Pae Tūroa is a multi-organisational, collaborative research programme with funding for seven years (2024-2031) from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The Platform
The Platform builds on the successful legacy of the Resilience to Nature’s Challenges National Science Challenge Kia Manawaroa – Ngā Ākina o Te Ao Tūroa (2014-2024), and seeks to create a step change in economic, social and environmental resilience.
Through maintaining and extending resilience science capability, harnessing existing partnerships and building new ones, we are seeking to expand our knowledge of natural hazards and develop innovative tools and strategies to build our resilience.
The Platform’s research is driven across three core science themes and two cross-cutting research programmes, determined through a process of engagement with users and researchers in late 2024 and early 2025.

Vision Mātauranga
The Vision Mātauranga programme builds Māori resilience capability, partnerships, knowledge and influence. It is designed to move Māori from participation in resilience science, to leadership within the resilience system.
Data and Enabling Technologies
In the face of ever-increasing challenges driven by climate change, it has never been more important to reduce our risks from natural hazards. We can accelerate these efforts by turning to new technologies.
Activities across the Platform
In support of our science themes and programmes, three enabling functions will drive impact and coordination activities across the Platform:
Post-Event Research, Insights and Learning (PERIL)
Coordinating the capture of data and insights following damaging natural hazard events, and synthesising and applying lessons to build future resilience.
Science Partnerships and Resilience Catalyst (SPARC)
Connecting across the hazard and resilience research system to enable cooperation in support of the shared mission.
Knowledge Mobilisation
Coordinating and supporting science communication, engagement and impact-focused activities across the Platform.
